The 31 songs of Halloween 2017

Happy almost Halloween everyone! It's been about a year since I had to abandon my last blog, so I wanted to give talking about media that interests me another try. The obvious thing to do in October is to watch 31 horror movies to get in the mood, but try as I might I could only get to 23 films last year and probably won't get even that many in this time around. So I thought instead, and in collaboration with my friend Kate and her blog here: https://journeyofkathryn.wordpress.com/ I'd look at 31 songs that, to me at least, invoke the Halloween spirit. Kate will have her own list (though she has my list and there may be some overlap) and I look forward to seeing her posts every day.

I've set a few rules for myself in an attempt to have a wider range of musical styles represented in my list. With one or two exceptions (with reasons I will explain in their own entries) I've allowed no more than one song from the same band. Otherwise there would be much too great a temptation to pick an appropriately dark band and fill up half the list with them. I've also striven to not have too many happy songs that could only be thought of as Halloween appropriate because they were used for ironic effect in films, as "What a Wonderful World" was used in "Good Morning Vietnam" for a non-horror example. I looked for tunes that had something that connected thematically with the season, though not usually explicitly about Halloween, as that would limit the list to mostly vintage novelty songs.

Without further ado, let's kick off this season's music with a laid back classic from Van Morrison:

Sit back, sip some hot tea, watch the leaves fall and let yourself slip into the October mood to the soothing sounds of 1970's "Moondance".
