Looking for something family friendly, nostalgic or just a little different to marathon for Halloween? I've got ya covered!
I recently (over several months) watched all the episodes of the original 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series with my girlfriends, and with 193 episodes it shouldn't surprise anyone that even with the extreme restrictions on what you can put into a children's show in the 1980s, the writers went back to the well of spooky themes a few times. Here are 6 such episodes you can watch to help celebrate our favorite holiday:
6. Super Irma - If you want a top 5, consider this an "Honorable Mention", because this episode is on the list somewhat by default, as the only episode to directly make mention of/take place (partially) on Halloween, with one short scene even taking place at a Channel 6 Halloween party. This episode does highlight one of my favorite characters in the series, long-suffering Channel 6 secretary Irma Langenstein, but neither she or the turtles come out looking very good here. With each side being played as unusually "jerkass" and entitled. Still, this one has it's fun moments and it's neat to see that party for a few seconds, even if they reuse a few jokes in it from a different costume party in an earlier episode.

The Halloween Dance is a very short scene but still fun to see. |
5. Farewell, Lotus Blossom - A sequel to the season 3 episode "Beware the Lotus Blossom", all you really need to know is that Lotus Blossom is a human ninja assassin once hired by Krang to destroy the turtles, and developed a will-they-won't-they relationship with Leonardo before disappearing into the night. This, the 2nd and last appearance of Lotus Blossom involves a resurrected, vengeful spirit from Feudal Japan, good stuff.

Not the only episode to deal with a ghost, but one of my favorites to do so. |
4. The Case of the Killer Pizzas - The Turtles fight yellow not-Xenomorphs from Aliens! How could you not love that? And I'm sure I'm not the only kid who saw this episode advertised many times at the end of a soon-to-be-worn-out VHS of the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action movie.

The creatures grow from little red monsters hidden in pizza boxes to these yellow Xenos. |
3. Nightmare in the Lair - Not-Freddy-Kreuger makes an appearance on Ninja Turtles, I wouldn't call this one of the best episodes in the series, but the bizarre concept alone makes it worth checking out.
|
If you ever wanted to see what a G-rated Freddy Kreuger would look like here's your chance. |
|
2. Rondo in New York - Remember "The Last Action Hero" and how the bad guy threatened to take villains from the movies and bring them to life? That actually happens in this episode, with cameos from Dracula and others. I would call this one a must-watch.
|
Their appearance is briefer than I'd have liked but this still got a huge grin from me. |
1. The Phantom of the Sewers - The Phantom of the Opera is a concept that is strangely referenced at least 3 times, with at least 2 episodes I can remember off-hand that parody it. One of the more clever episodes in the series, this is also a must-watch.
