31 Songs of Halloween 2017, Day 18

Powerwolf are a German metal band who eschew the more harsh tones of death metal one might expect from their corpse-painted appearance in favor of power metal, my favorite sub-genre. For me this the best of both worlds, because while I enjoy the darker and dramatic themes of death and other metals I don't actually care for those sub-genres musically as a rule.

Even better, as one might or might not guess from their name, lycanthropy is one of Powerwolf's main motifs. Metal songs about vampires are pretty common, but as with movies while their songs do exist werewolves are under-represented in comparison. Of course werewolves are not Powerwolf's only major thematic element. They also take a lot of pleasure in cosplaying as/mocking the Catholic Church, which is fine by me but of course ymmv.

Powerwolf have a few songs specifically and explicitly about werewolves and for my money the best one is "Son of a Wolf" from 2011's "Blood of the Saints". You can check out the track below and listen to their other works to judge for yourself though. Happy Werewolf Wednesday!
